Has responsive support for Android 4.4 been temporarily removed?

The rendering for Android 4.4 is looking to be ignoring media queries - columns aren’t stacking and fonts are staying the same.

It shouldn’t be something in the HTML since the Gmail app is rendering correctly.

pnaonline,
Thank you for posting!

No, I don’t think Google has made any changes to Android 4.4 recently.

Here is a test with your media queries removed, and I think I can see some differences:

So I am pretty sure media queries are working, as much as they can in Android 4.4. Because this is the native client and not Gmail, 4.4 hasn’t received any changes lately. However, only certain techniques are going to work in Android 4.4. For example, this client doesn’t support TD stacking. Take a look at this blog for more info: https://www.emailonacid.com/blog/article/email-development/how_android_is_strangling_responsive_design

Android Gmail now allows the use of media queries, and should allow either kind of stacking.  As far as iOS Gmail, this client doesn’t allow media queries at all and has a built in “auto-sizing” feature, so it will look quite different from Android 4.4.

I hope that clears things up!

Ah I didn’t realize that the previous email I was testing was a single column so I didn’t see the stacking error. Since these updates are in the process I’m not going to start stacking tables or changing the <td> tag and wait for the update to come through. Thanks for clearing this up.

pnaonline,
As far as I know, there are no plans to update Android 4.4. Android Gmail is getting updates, but I wouldn’t expect any changes to this email client.

I suppose since we don’t know the reasons I can say it doesn’t make sense. Google fonts, Google Android…
