Mozi-Makeovers: Ann Taylor 3 Ways
Posted February 20, 2013 by Geoff Phillips
We've heard some concern about the file size of emails when using Mozify. Like any tool, Mozify can be used many different ways. We’re going to show you three different approaches to Mozifying one email. We're going to use an email from Ann Taylor with some nice graphics and a starting size of 10k. Check out what this email looks like when it hits most inboxes, below. Hover over any of the screen caps to see how it will look with images downloaded.
As you can see, wireframes just don't do this email justice. If a recipient doesn't hit "download images" they'll have no idea what this email is about. We can fix that with Mozify.
We’ll start with a light use of Mozify for this email. Our goal is to clean up the area above the fold, including the all wireframes. The incentive offer is the most important part of the email, so we’ll also be Mozifying that. Though we could try to maintain some of the visual nuance of the graphic surrounding the incentive offer, in this case we’ll try to save some file size by creating a simpler version. The area of the email that is below the fold can be left in wireframes, which will remind some readers to hit the download images button. As you can see, this implementation of Mozify adds about 19k to the email.
In this case we want to Mozify a bit more of the email, increasing the file size slightly but gaining greater control over the look of the email before images are downloaded. We can do a bit more with the image that contains the incentive offer, and we’ll replace a few of the thumbnail images below the fold with stylized text. This compromise saves us a lot of file size compared to creating mosaics for each of these thumbnails, while still communicating the same information to the viewer. This use of Mozify adds 33k to the email.
We can take Mozify even further by using it on the thumbnails at the bottom. Our recommended limit (which Mozify will remind you of should you go over) is 102k. Keep this in mind as you make edits to your file. Another useful trick is that you can keep up to 3 Mozified images in process at the same time. When you get to the “Insert Mosaic” step, just click on another image in your email. When you click back on the first image again, you’ll find it still on the same step. You can use this technique to balance your mosiacs to make sure you stay within the file size limit. Remember that the KB for each of these mosaics won’t be added to the total until you click “Insert Mosaic.” In order to stay under our limit, we’ll use the same Mozification on the incentive that we used on the light version. This use of Mozify brings us pretty close to the limit, adding 86k.
